Picture yourself on the 10th tee. The waves are crashing below, the famous old lighthouse is close-by and between you and the safety of the fairway lies 200 yards of open water and perilous rock. This is what links golf is all about. This is why The Open came back to Turnberry.
The Ailsa has always been one of the world's great golfing challenges. Now, thanks to a series of exhilarating changes, including six new tees and 250 new hard yards, it has become even more dramatic. On July 16th 2009, the world's best players lined up once again on the first tee, trying to emulate the heroic feats of previous Open winners at Turnberry: Tom Watson in 1977, Greg Norman in 1986 and Nick Price in 1994. For so long it looked like Watson would miraculously repeat his triumph of 30 years earlier. But, in the end, only one man could hold his nerve when all about were faltering. Step forward Stewart Cink, a fine addition to the Turnberry Open honours board.
But links golf at Turnberry isn't an experience reserved for the leading pros. It's a thrill available to all who love the great game. You are now able to recreate the Open magic yourself on the Ailsa. You can find out more here.
