Hole 1 "Barley Rigs"

The par 5 opening hole of the Kintyre championship golf course at Turnberry Resort, Scotland is a long dog-leg left. Its name refers to the adjacent barley fields planted after the Second World War.

The ideal tee shot should favour the left side of the fairway to avoid the bunkers on the right. A burn winds its way across the fairway in the second shot landing area; therefore, players may have to lay up short to avoid it. The green is surrounded by gorse and a large greenside bunker looms on the right.

This picturesque short par 5 must be played strategically in my opinion. There is a temptation for the longer hitter to take on the hidden green from the tee but you need a lot of luck to avoid the thick rough and to find this small target.
